The West Virginia Law Review invites proposals for papers and panels for its upcoming “Appalachian Justice Symposium.” The Symposium will take place on February 23 & 24, 2018, at the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia. Law Review editors will select essays for publication in a special symposium issue of the West Virginia Law Review entitled “Essays on Appalachia.” The purpose of the conference is to bring together people from various disciplines to have a serious conversation about the legal and public policy issues faced by Appalachia and to collaborate to develop innovative solutions to those challenges in keeping with what Jeff Biggers describes as “Appalachia’s best-kept secret”
While the Law Review will consider any proposal that advances the Symposium’s theme, it encourages the submission of panels and papers that explore the following topical areas related to the region: labor & employment, substance abuse, health care, education, energy, entrepreneurship, policing, veteran issues, broadband access, prison reform, property law, tax reform, immigration, and tort reform. Please consider participating in our Symposium and forward this call widely.
Essay proposals should include the author’s name, institutional affiliation and contact information, the title of the paper to be presented, and a brief abstract of the paper limited to 500 words. Panel proposals should include the names and short biographies of each of the proposed panelists and moderators, the panel’s title, as well as a brief description of the purpose and goals of the panel limited to 750 words.

Symposium registration will open in August 2017. The registration fee is $100.00 for all Symposium attendees that are full-time faculty members. Registration is free for students and community members. Symposium attendees are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses. Arrangements are being made for conference hotels.
