The Saint Louis University Law Journal is soliciting distinguished professors to present at this year’s annual Richard J. Childress Memorial Lecture, featuring Clive Stafford Smith, as well as publish a written work in this year’s Childress Issue of the SLU Law Journal.

The 2017 Childress Lecture will take place over Thursday and Friday, October 12-13th 2017.  Our keynote speaker, Clive Stafford Smith, will be speaking about his work as the Founder of Reprieve, representing prisoners on Guantanamo Bay and in death penalty cases in many countries. He will be examining the role, rhetoric, and practices of the United States from an international human rights perspective.

Our hope is to surround his talk with the voices of practitioners and academics who can discuss the legal practices and unique role of the United States examined from a human rights perspective.  Our goal is to have a variety of voices - practitioners, academics, and those working both domestically and internationally - who can touch on issues of criminal law, torture, imprisonment, criminalization of protest and the targeting of specific groups.

The Childress Lecture, named in honor of former Dean Richard J. Childress (1969-1976), is a premier academic event highlighting a provocative and timely area of law. The lecture commemorates the contributions Dean Childress made academically, ethically, and socially to benefit the Saint Louis University School of Law. Among other achievements, Dean Childress is credited with founding the Saint Louis University Law Journal in 1949.
